Contemporary Issues in Aging
Families caring for their loved ones is something that has be taking place for many years but with not enough needed attention nor focuses. Many policies have changed this issue allowing for working caregivers to take a paid leave (FMLA) to care for their aging loved one.
One of the biggest misconception seniors face as the age and look to family for needed assistance, is that with this assistance comes a loss of human rights, the right to make decisions for self. Seniors that are within their right functional mind set and able to make full rational choices are also able to decide the type of care they will receive and where from.
There are economic issues that can effect family caregivers such as jobs that don not provide benefits such as FMLA, those with low paying jobs that can’t afford to take off and single women and minorities that already live in poverty stricken areas are faced with more challenges when providing care and tend to turn to family and community for help.
